Bridget O’Leary(歐小咪)

[Australia]

Monkey Queen, Acrylic, 324x62cm, 2011

We find the Chinese mythic Monkey King fun and unique without complex philosophical reasoning or political ideologies. This Monkey Queen (2010)[i] was created by Bridget O’Leary, an Australian female artist who has lived in Taiwan for almost a decade. What is interesting about this painting is the unexpected aura deriving from harmonious and innovative expressions. The material, techniques, and form are all Western except for the subject matter, but the painting reminds us of classical Chinese aesthetic concepts.

[i] This painting was exhibited first for a month from September to October in 2010 in Blossom Spirit –
A Group Exhibition of Taiwanese and Australian Artists at Fo Guan Yuan Art Gallery in Kaohsiung Taiwan. Later in 2011 it was exhibited from July 17 to 20 in Dayangfeng meishu zuopin jiaoliuzhan at Xiamen Art Gallery in Xiemen China.
